With a modern, sedentary lifestyle it is very easy to put on weight. Here are some practical tips to fight the flab and get your weight down. It took you a long time to put on weight so you need to take a long view about losing it. Quick diets tend not to work. You need a change in lifestyle. This is the regime that worked for me.

1. Eliminate the Enemy.

The enemy are high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods. The single most important thing you can do is to remove these from your diet. Specifically, make sure that you do not have the following in your Home; bread, potatoes, pasta, chips, savory snacks, cakes, cookies, sweets, candies, chocolates and sugary drinks. This sounds severe but if you can remove these items you remove the temptation and opportunity to consume them. So what do you eat instead?

We are fast becoming a society of statues. A curious species who seem to have our collective asses permanently attached to a chair. Or preferably, a couch. We discovered that within a few years many of us will have identical movement patterns and daily activity levels to that of the oak tree. Yep, it appears that many of us have become fat (seated) spectators in the game of life. Heavy sigh.

Moving towards a Solution

So as I鈥檓 an Exercise Scientist and Personal Development Bloke, I thought it might be timely and appropriate for me to throw out one simple suggestion which might be a practical and realistic strategy to offset a little of that collective inactivity. A simple way to burn a bunch more calories, lose some weight and fat, improve our health, increase our fitness and get us in a better place emotionally and psychologically without even having to leave our lounge room (although we could do it anywhere). No use talking about problems unless we鈥檙e serious about finding a solution. Otherwise we鈥檙e just complaining.

Losing weight can be frustrating. Many diets require serious changes to your lifestyle, and can be expensive or socially prohibitive.

Here are 8 easy and inexpensive changes you can make to your diet that don’t require any radical adjustments to your life. Many of these are well-known, but it鈥檚 amazing how easy it is to overlook something that is so simple and beneficial.

The good news? There鈥檚 no exercise involved, and you won鈥檛 have to eliminate junk food, alcohol, pasta, pizza or pastries, and you can even eat just under a pound of chocolate per month!

1. Ditch The White Bread (Save 6,600 Calories/Month)

Bread is a staple of most Western diets. Many people eat it for both breakfast (toast) and lunch (sandwiches), consuming on average 3-4 slices per day. That鈥檚 21-28 slices per week.

Your average slice of white bread contains anywhere between 80-110 calories per slice, depending on brand and thickness. Switching from regular processed white bread to regular processed wholemeal bread won鈥檛 make much of a difference to your calorie intake. The calorie, fat, protein, carbohydrate and fibre content for white or wholemeal is basically the same.

Even assuming the lower end of our numbers, 21 slices of 80 calorie bread per week = 1,680 calories. And it could be as much as 28 slices of 110 calorie (i.e., very thick) bread, which equates to 3,080 calories, or a staggering 13,200 per month!

However, if you switch from standard sliced bread to an alternative such as Nimble Wholemeal (or white) or Warburtons Medium Wholemeal (400g) each slice you eat drops down to 48 and 55 calories respectively (as well as making significant savings in carbs and fat).

This translates to 21 slices of 48 calories, or 1,008 calories per week, or 28 slices of 55 calories, which is 1,540 calories per week, or 6,600 per month.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before the mass marketing about diet and fitness and weight loss caught up with yoga.

After all, yoga is certainly going through a period of resurgance - not the first, as these things typically move in cycles as does most of the market.

Typically though, when you read about yoga, the topic is peace of mind, spirituality, relaxation, meditation, perhaps physical conditioning and strength (both physical and mental).

This time though, the debate rests squarely on yoga’s ability to shed pounds in a society that is struggling with record levels of obesity on the one hand, and a severe “thin” image problem held by popular celebrities on the other.
